This partnership has a shared vision of providing an outstanding educational experience for all pupils aged 3-16 in our area.

Careers


Almondbury High School and Language College works closely with Calderdale & Kirklees Careers who provide the Connexions Careers Service for people aged 13-19.

 

The Connexions Personal Adviser for Almondbury High School and Language College is Sue Sheridan.  Sue, who has been attached to the school for 4 years, works for Calderdale and Kirklees Careers Ltd and provides independent and impartial careers information, advice and guidance for students from Year 9 to 11.

 

 

The role of the Personal Adviser

 

To help students make the successful transition from school to college, work or training and:

  • provide information, advice and guidance to students, one-to-one or in groups
  • help choosing the right career or pathway – college, sixth form, apprenticeships or training
  • help with finding and applying for courses, jobs or apprenticeships
  • help with CVs, letters and interviews
  • be at parents’ evenings and careers events
  • support students until they are settled in further education, work, or training.

 

In addition to careers lessons and activities on cross curricular days, all Year 11 students are offered an individual careers interview to help them make choices about their next steps.  The Get Organised booklet is available from October for all Y11 students

The Directions booklet is given to each Y9 student to help with subject option choice. This booklet and sessions with Sue Sheridan, give them information and advice about the career implications of choosing the subjects on offer. http://www.workabout.org.uk/Directions2012.pdf.pdf

 

In Year 10 students have group sessions on post 16 options and the opportunity to request an individual interview.

 

Year 7 and 8 students are also welcome to come down at the Careers Room opposite G4 if they have any questions or would like any information about career options.

The Careers Library

 

The school has a well-stocked Careers Library situated within the main Library and is open at the same times. It includes a range of leaflets and books covering:

  • a comprehensive range of job information
  • local college prospectuses
  • university prospectuses
  • money for study, including learner bursaries and student finance
  • employment rights and responsibilities
  • writing CVs, completing application forms and preparing for interviews
  • personal issues such as homelessness, bullying, relationships
  • where to get help and further information.

The school also purchase Kudos, a web based programme that suggests career ideas based on answers to questions on aspects of work.  This can be accessed by any student in school or at home. Go to the Workabout and click on ‘Kudos’ and put in the schools post code (HD5 8PQ), then choose your own user name and password.

 

The National Apprenticeship Service website www.apprenticeships.org.uk has local vacancies, just register to get full access to vacancy details.
